History: | Empire of Japan was founded on January 3, 1868, when supporters of the emperor Meiji overthrew Yoshinobu, the last Tokugawa shogun. Japan's rapid industrialization and militarization under the slogan Fukoku KyÅhei (富国強兵, "Enrich the Country, Strengthen her Armed Forces") and Shokusan KÅgyÅ (殖産興æ¥, "Promote Industry") led to its emergence as a world power and the establishment of a colonial empire. |
