History:The City state of Bristol, took its first breath of independence in 1630 with the purchase of Bristol Castle, by the City council of Merchants. This lead to a Declaration of Neutrality during the First English Civil War, the City barring its gates, arming the citizenry, and the hiring of Swiss and Dutch Mercenaries barred both Parliament and the King from entering the walls. With the defeat of the King during the Civil War, the City retained a large degree of Autonomy, while reintegrating with the rest of the Republic at the time, but they never forgot the sweet taste of freedom from the crown or parliament, this eventually came to a head in 2018 when after two years of failed negotiations with the EU the City called a Local referendum on continued adherence to the UK the vote passing 61 - 39 in favour of secession, the City declared independence in late 2019, forming a 'City state' with a number of outlying regions stretching out past Bath down past Weston-super-Mare and up to Gloucester, ever since the city has struggled with balancing the books, and maintaining the social programs across the city but has for the most part shown it can fend for itself in a hostile modern world.
