Changelog

I try to record all updates to the game here. Each changelog post should have a relevant forum post, so head there for discussion: Announcements

10/28/2020 - Rapid Expansion Domestic Policy

A new domestic policy, Rapid Expansion, has been added. If your nation chooses the domestic policy of Rapid Expansion, you will get a 5% discount on all land purchases.

You can edit your Domestic Policy on the Nation Edit page. Note: you can only change your domestic policy once every 5 days.

We have also improved the display so that you will see a more detailed description of each policy (as well as War Policies) when you cycle through the options.

Here is an example screenshot of that:

10/04/2020 - A Video About Donation Limits and the History of P&W

Hi everyone,

This is less of a game update, and more of a personal note about the game from me to you all. First, I want to say thank you to everyone playing Politics & War. You all (the community) are what really makes the game great. I'm grateful to have you all here.

I do want to formally announce that I have been able to use some of the funds generated from donations to hire a part-time developer for Politics & War. If you haven't noticed, we've had a lot of quality-of-life changes in the past few weeks, and they are all thanks to her. I don't want to set anyone's expectations too high, as she doesn't have a super in-depth knowledge of P&W's mechanics yet, but she is certainly a great programmer (better than me!)

I've also been investing a lot of the donations from the game into advertising. While I've been experimenting with this for some time, I just want everyone to know that I am working on recruiting more players, as I think it creates a better gameplay experience when we have a larger and more diverse playerbase.

The new “rate the game” popups have also been helpful in collecting feedback on the game more directly, and over time we will be able to track average ratings to see what is and isn't working, and get a more objective measure for how different changes to gameplay are impacting the overall player experience. My hope is that by collecting this additional data we will be able to better shape the direction of the game.

Lastly, I recorded a video of me talking to you all to tell you a bit about the history of Politics and War, as well as a bit about the donation limits being reset on the first of the month. Originally I had thought that maybe I could record a video to go along with the monthly resets, but I sent out a random survey to 10% of the players and got some really good feedback on the video below. I think what would be better is to have me record a video each month talking about what progress we've made to the game, and what is coming soon, instead of trying to record one video and recycle it each month.

In a nutshell, I am working hard to make the game even better and more fun for everyone. If you're interested in learning more about the history of Politics and War, a little about me and why I created it, as well as why we have donation limits each month, please check out the video below:

09/28/2020 - A lot of updates!

Hi everyone,

I've got a lot of updates to share with you! I'll just get right to it:

  • The flag of Singapore was added to the default flags list (how did we overlook that one all this time?)
  • The Mass Infrastructure Purchase Tool (for VIPs) has been improved. Now, instead of forcing it to apply to all cities, you can select which cities you want to buy/sell infrastructure in en-masse.
  • A Mass Land Purchase Tool (for VIPs) was added! This works just like the Mass Infrastructure Purchase Tool. You can find links to both of these from your Cities page.
  • The links at the top of the Account page have been updated for better formatting.
  • Starting today, regular data dumps will be generated and available for download. These will be zipped .csv files with basic data on nations, alliances, trades, and wars. You can find the directory for those here: https://politicsandwar.com/data/ hopefully this will help eliminate the need for webscraping and API usage. These dumps will be generated at 11:55 PM each day (before server daychange) to avoid excess lag right at midnight. That means that changes that happen in the last 5 minutes of the day won't be reflected in these data dumps, but hopefully that will be trivial.
  • We have a new WYSIWYG text editor that's been implemented in various textareas throughout the game. We may have some bugs with this yet that we will still have to work out, but it is a significant improvement for formatting your text in-game. Old BBCodes should still work.
  • There is now a popup confirmation on the National Projects page when you are buying or selling National Projects. This should help eliminate the accidental buying / selling of projects on accidental and mistaken clicks.
  • We now have a “User Rating” popup that users should see approximately once every 30 days. This allows you to rate the game on a scale of 1-5 stars, as well as offer feedback on what you think would improve the game. This will help us measure progress on the game (e.g. are ratings increasing or decreasing over time?) as well as make it easier to get feedback from all players on things that could be improved.

Big update, I know! These are mostly Quality of Life changes to improve the overall game experience. If you have suggestions on things that could make the game better, please use the aforementioned User Rating feedback tool built into the game, or for larger suggestions and to discuss ideas with other players, you can use the forum here: https://forum.politicsandwar.com/index.php?/forum/52-game-suggestions/
