The Government of New Vilania is a constitutional monarchy. It is split into the royal government and republican government. The royal government, which has its capital at Kingsbury, holds mostly ceremonial duties and does not have any real political power. The republican government, which has its capital at New Vilania City, is popularly elected every four years and it is the one that holds the real political power and makes executive decisions in governing the nation.

The royal government is headed by the royal Dacia family, the head of whom is currently King Alexander V, whose official function is Head of State. The republican government is headed by Prime Minister Andrew Wilkinson, whose official function is Head of Government. While he does hold executive power, the man who holds the bulk of executive power is President Kenneth Watkins, whose official function is Head of the Nation.

I will now describe the separate branches of the government in more detail:

Royal Government:

King: Alexander V

Queen: Miriam

Crown Prince: Andrew

Crown Princess: Helena

Executive Royal Chancellor: Frederick Hemingway

Deputy Royal Chancellor: Daniel Walter

As stated above, the royal government performs ceremonial functions and does not hold any real political power. However, they are treated with the utmost respect by the nation and do appear at major state events.

The King is Alexander V, who assumed the throne on March 22, 2087 after the abdication of his father, Alexander IV. His wife, Queen Miriam, was christened as Queen that same day. Crown Prince Andrew, the King’s oldest son, was officially proclaimed Crown Prince on May 13, 2090, the day of his eighteenth birthday. And Crown Princess Helena was originally a Kolakian princess. She was made Crown Princess on December 28, 2098, the date of her wedding to Crown Prince Andrew.

Frederick Hemingway serves as the royal family’s Executive Chancellor, a position he has held since August 9, 2088. His top assistant, Deputy Chancellor Daniel Walter, was given his post on March 7, 2095.

Republican Government:

The republican government is split into three branches: the executive, the legislative, and the judicial. The executive branch is led by the President, the Head of the Nation, and is composed of the President, Vice President, and his cabinet members. The legislative branch is headed by the Prime Minister, the Head of Government, and is composed of the two houses of the National Parliament, the Legislative Assembly (lower) and the Senate (upper). And the judicial branch is composed of the Supreme Court, which has 11 justices, one chief, one associate chief, and nine associates.

Elections:

Elections in New Vilania are held every four years. They are held to elect the President and both houses of the National Parliament.

The presidential election takes place on February 4. Each candidate running for president must register with a party. The parties of all candidates who receive more than 2.5% of the vote get proportional representation in the Legislative Assembly based on the total share of the vote they receive. The 18 provinces in Vilania are divided into 150 Senatorial districts, each of which elects one senator to represent them in the Senate.

In the presidential and Senatorial races, if no candidate wins 50% of the votes, then the top two participate in a runoff on March 22.

On April 22, the newly elected President, Vice President, and National Parliament are sworn into office.

Finally, every odd-numbered year on May 7, the Legislative Assembly elects the Prime Minister. He is sworn in on May 21.
