TfD has released draft plans for the new South Dyfed railway, officially opening the public consultation that is expected to last 12 weeks.

The current plans show 3 possible Phase 1 routes, with 2 routes following the South Dyfed industrial belt, and another opting to follow the valleys.

The routes are expected to cost the following:

  • Red Route - Caerllion to Caerfyrddin via Llanelli
    • Estimated cost: £13.1 billion
    • Estimated time: 15 years
  • Yellow Route: Casnewydd to Caerfyrddin via Ynys yr Hafren
    • Estimated cost: £12.7 billion
    • Estimated time: 12 years
  • Blue Route: Abergavenny to Caerfyrddin via Hirgrug
    • Estimated cost: £22 billion
    • Estimated time: 21 years

It is unclear yet how many stations will be at each of these routes. We expect this information to be released shortly.

The Chief Secretary of Dyfed (Social Party) called this a historic day:

"We have always discussed building rail routes. We've always formulated plans. However this is the furthest we have ever gone. I can announce these plans WILL take place. We will have a rail line in the next couple of decades I am sure of it".
