The Spirit of the Free Society

Part one | Part two

Family Structure

The traditional family structure found in Western culture reigns supreme and is held in high esteem in Nova Cyberia. Traditional family is strongly characterized by the male-female, two-parent household, where the man is the provider and protector of the family, whereas the woman is the nurturing caretaker of the family. Those are the necessary roles of masculinity and femininity within the free society, the former of which is characterized by strength and toughness, while the latter is defined as compassionate and affectionate.

Although sometimes you may find the roles to be switched in the culture. There are what you would call "tomboys" which are women that take on the emotional and physical strength in order to act on the role of the protector and provider, while the more compassionate men may take on more of the nurturing and caregiving role. Although these switched roles are less common due to biology and hormones typically reflecting more of the traits of masculine men and feminine women, it is openly accepted in the culture for the roles to be switched, so long as there is a complementary balance where both roles are being filled or both interchange roles for the family.

Interdependence

Human touch and affection are very much important in Cyberium culture. It is very common to find people exchanging long hugs, and in the case of cuddling, intimate cuddling among couples, platonic cuddling between men and women without partners, and platonic cuddling between people of the same gender. It's a way to show love, compassion, affection, and appreciation, and it's also used as a way to prevent loneliness and maintain cheerfulness.

Nova Cyberia has an extreme gun culture, with self-defense and mutual-defense being heavily encouraged as a way to discourage conflict and fend off aggression. Due to the absence of any government, and therefore absence of national-defense or public-police, aka the false illusions of "guaranteed security," people are pushed to create their own forms of private defense and security that are most suitable for them. Most people arm themselves or form private police patrols as ways to fend for communities, and people also self-organize defense companies among each other (private armies, private airforces, private navies), with many families even forming their own private clans with militias.

People voluntarily organize private communities, most typically based upon common values and through fraternities of mutual-aid, as a way to build social trust and maintain social cohesion. Private laws set up boundaries through voluntary agreements that reflect the values of the individuals involved, where such breach or violation of contract may warrant enforcement through social ostracism, exclusion, and expulsion from private communities and organizations. These decentralized networks of voluntary agreements and private legal codes have led to the formation of a spontaneous order of sorts.

Cultural values

Christianity is the core tenant of the free society. Although there is a diverse selection of Christian denominations found in Nova Cyberia, most notably Baptism and Catholicism, most of the nation is devoutly centered around Christ, with an estimate of around ~90% of the population being Christian. With this in mind, most private communities and organizations across Nova Cyberia practice the faith and reflect this through private laws, legal codes, policies, and customs.

While the Cyberium language and culture are common across the nation that keeps the identity strong, there are also various different regional cultures with their own local customs and traditions. Foreign migrant ancestors previously migrated from their foreign countries and then integrated into specific regions of Nova Cyberia, bringing in and blending their customs, traditions, and languages with the local American culture at the time. Most of these migrants were from Mexico and Germany, while there were also some Russian migrants, and the need for understanding to get along culminated in the formation of a new language based upon Latin called "Cyberium."

Natural law and natural order root out degeneracy in Nova Cyberia. Seeking out the immediate pleasure or gratification (high time preference) is very shortsighted and is an unsustainable practice that causes instability, and thus, gets rooted out by natural selection if let to rot, due to not being fit for future survival. On the other hand, looking ahead with delayed gratification and foresight (low time preference) is most certainly sustainable in the long-term, and therefore allows for stability, prosperity, and growth that will be fit to stay. This has culminated in Cyberium being so culturally conservative, accompanied by social exclusion with ostracism, while rejecting inclusion, acceptance, or tolerance of degeneracy.
