As the results of the March 30th election are announced, the Conservatives gambit to hold onto government has spectacularly backfired.  With the Liberal Party gaining an additional 35 seats elevating them to a total of 159 seats and forming the government as Liberal leader Brandon Howard has been sworn in as President this week.  The new President has attributed his party's victory to “astonishing overconfidence by the Conservative Party” and how Canadians are feeling discouraged by the current government’s handling of the AOI and global recession.  Experts also say Conservatives' decision to call an election during a bad economy and terror crisis comes across as arrogant as many Canadians are struggling in their daily lives.  The House of Commons sees its most substantial change in recent decades as a new party enters, the Green Party of Canada with 2 seats making it the smallest federal party.  They had registered just after the election was called and made significant gains in two months.  The party’s leader Joan Park posted to social media clarifying her party's position on the AOI, “We in no way support or agree with the Anti-Oil Initiative's actions, the Green Party believes in environmental action but reaffirms its commitment to do so within legal means.” which has garnered support.

Parliament's composition now sits at 159 Liberals, 113 Conservatives, 64 New Democrats, and 2 Green Party members.  With left wing parties now overwhelmingly controlling the House of Commons the future of Canada looks more progressive than it has for the past 11 years.  Conservatives however, particularly MP Lauren Smith have taken the loss quite well, during an interview with CBC's The National she replied with the following after being asked how she feels on losing the election, “We invited Canadians to participate in the Great Conversation and they wanted a change, nothing wrong with that.  I regret I wasn't able to leave our country better than it is currently, but I'm sure President Howard will do a great job.  Besides, with all the free time not being President brings, I look forward to spending more time with my husband and daughters.”.  The Conservative Party has also announced it will be holding a leadership vote later this summer, something not unexpected for parties that formed the government for multiple terms.

The President's Office has released Howard's agenda for the upcoming months, key items include assisting Canadians during the recession, shutting down the AOI, and improving relations with GEDO countries.  The Global Economic and Defensive Organization, which Canada's application and acceptance into came as the Smith administration's last major act is largely composed of countries Canada has few ties to.  This makes establishing relations of particular importance going forward to ensure Canada’s place in the global community is secure.  President Howard allegedly hopes to do so through visits to GEDO countries to meet with their respective heads of state and foster trust between governments.
