In a shock to the nation, the Presidential Office has announced the death of President Yang Feng.
This morning, during a speech outside a factory in Yilan, Tania's capital, multiple gunshots were reported among the crowd. Federal Security Service agents, who are responsible for protecting Tanian officials, immediately moved in towards where the shots were fired from and arrested two men.
A spokesman for the Tanian Presidential Office confirmed that President Feng had died in the shooting and, in accordance with the Constitution of the People's Republic of Tania, Prime Minister Jiang Yen has assumed the presidency.
The Politburo of the Tanian Communist Party convened in an emergency session following the shooting, naming Mr Yen the General Secretary of the Communist Party.

Shortly after being arrested, the two men admitted to FSS investigators that they were members of the Borneo islamic insurgent group who carried out the Kuching attacks last month. This information was relayed immediately to the new president, and prosecutors charged both men with revolutionary activity, assassination of the head of state and terrorism; they are both currently incarcerated in Yilan Federal Prison.
The Yilan federal coroner ruled President Yang Feng's death an unlawful killing and referred the verdict to a federal court.
Shortly afterwards, President Jiang Yen accused militants in a statement of 'violating Tania's sovereignty and its government'. He vowed the 'most extreme consequences that militants have ever known' and confirmed that an even larger crackdown on militant activities would come.
A spokesman for the Governor of Borneo SAR, Yuan Lanfen, later confirmed that the new President had been in contact with Borneo's Governor and that a state of emergency has now been declared on the island over the current militant situation. This status will allow authorities the right to arrest individuals without charge for up to 6 months before they must be charged in a court or released.
Mr Lanfen also confirmed that Borneo would observe five days of official mourning for the late President. The Governor described his death as 'tragic' and pledged that militants 'have now signed their death warrants' following the assassination.
