Parents are NOT entertained…

Like in many other nations, after-school activities are a staple of Glatixian culture. These extra-curricular clubs allow kids to socialize with peers and develop a passion outside of the strict boundaries of an educational environment. However, these clubs have recently come under fire amid a kind of cultural awakening that's spread across the country. Parents are finally asking if the impact that clubs have on kids is truly as positive as most believe. No group or organization seems to be safe from this scrutiny, even mainstays like the Glatixian Youth League, National Teen's Orchestra, and of course, the Glatixian League of Adolescent Death-Pit Fighters.

Harry Hendriks, a concerned Glatixian parent, had this to say:

“A lot of people funnel their kids into these groups without much regard for what the -child- wants. Yes, after school Death-Pit fighting is a great way for our son to make some friends, but it being a mandatory part of his curriculum means that he has less out-of-school time to be… well… a kid! We don't want schools putting that sort of pressure on our John. He already has to do P.E. every day, why not move arena-practice to that block instead? Don't get me wrong, I think that riding down another freshmen with a war chariot can be a healthy outlet for teen frustration, but not everything has to be about sports all the time."

Jeremy Relsler, a grizzled Yangcester High School Coach, also weighed in on the situation:

“Kids have enough free time as-is, and what do they do with it? Not gladiator fighting, that's for sure! I see Glatixian ‘adults’ walking around these days who've never even lost a finger! Kids are meant to play rough, break a few bones, die once in a while. It makes ‘em tough! Nowadays even school clubs are pansied-up beyond belief. Loss of a limb used to mean a few minutes of bench time, now they remove them from the arena! Ridiculous! Next thing you know, they’ll give out trophies for lion-slaying.”

Dr. Erwin von Vonsteinburgveltitchkleiner, chief of the Glatixian National Sociology Institute, gave his opinion on the situation:

“The answer lies somewhere in-between. Kids need to be brought into mandatory social-circles because that forces them to develop interactive skills that they'll use in adulthood. However, they also need to have their own personal time away from others, to allow for introspection. The answer here is to strike a balance between time spent in their rooms and time spent strangling a rival school-child and watching the life drain from their eyes. It's not just a pragmatic concern, it's an ethical one.”
