In a joint statement, the Department for Transport and Maerrunorian Transport Authority have stated that Southern Rail will be nationalised with immediate effect, this is following a "severe breach" in safety regulations after it was determined that the operator had "failed" to properly maintain its trains and as a result was "endangering passengers" on the South Eastern Railway network.

Southern Rail which operates most services in the South East uses older diesel stock such as the British Rail class 171 to operate trains between Liberation, Dinas Emrys, Whitworth, Liskeard, and Verwood. As both Great Western Railway and Chiltern Railways are found to have surplus rolling stock the MTA has announced a "one-year transition period" where these operators will resume Southern services as Maerrunorian Railways aims to acquire new diesel rolling stock to take over services on these routes.

Statement in full:

"The Department for Transport and the Maerrunorian Transport Authority (MTA) hereby jointly announce an essential and necessary measure to ensure the safety and reliability of railway services in South Eastern Maerrunoria. Following a severe breach in safety regulations by Southern Rail, it has been determined that the operator has failed to maintain the Automatic Warning System (AWS) in its trains, thereby endangering passengers and increasing the risk of potential collisions.

In addition to the safety concerns, Southern Rail has persistently fallen short of punctuality standards, with approximately 30% of its services being canceled last year. This ongoing failure to meet operational requirements has undermined the confidence of passengers and significantly impacted the reliability of the railway network.

To address these critical issues and safeguard the interests of the traveling public, the Department for Transport and the MTA have made the decision to force a merger between Southern Rail and Maerrunorian Railways, a state-owned operator. This merger will allow for a comprehensive review of safety protocols and an immediate improvement in service reliability.

During a one-year transition period, Maerrunorian Railways will contract Chiltern Railways to operate services between Liskeard Central, Dinas Emrys, and Whitworth. Additionally, Great Western Railway will be responsible for operating the route from Liberation Central to Verwood via Emrys Junction. These arrangements will ensure the continuation of services while Maerrunorian Railways acquires the necessary diesel stock to operate the routes independently.

The Department for Transport and the MTA reaffirm their unwavering commitment to passenger safety, service quality, and the improvement of the railway network in Maerrunoria. Through this forced merger and subsequent measures, we aim to restore public trust in the railway industry in the South East and ensure a reliable, safe, and punctual service for all passengers.

We will continue to work together to provide updates on the progress of the transition and the improvements being made, fostering transparency and accountability throughout this process.
