The curfew applied to prevent any violence between Indian and Chinese communities is ended today. A small riot did break out in Calcutta, which was brutally put down by police. In total, 3 people got injured from tear gas and rubber gun firings. The Calcutta Chinatown borough's head, Hao Xuan Dutta thanked the government in its work to prevent a riot, and also thanked Bengal government in its help in enforcing the police. Many Indian forums too stood in solidarity with the Chinese community of the nation. Kazeya Takeyuchi, recently released from jail and a part of the Liberal People's forum said "I am pleased to hear no riots happened between both the communities, but it is a shame that the government did not manage to teach people why these riots should have never managed to happen in the first place".
The Chinese community of Calcutta came in the 1800s as leather merchants and traders in the city. The lived in the two colonies of Tiretta Bazaar and Tangra, both of which had large leather tanneries. After a rapid decline in their population, they started to grow again after improvements in the colonies being made. Today, they form about 70% population of the colonies and form 3% of the city's metropolitan population, the third largest community in the city after Bengalis and Burmese. Not only in Calcutta, but the Chinese also live in many parts of east India, and the Yunnan state is considered to be a part of the Chinese culture. The last large riots that happened in the nation was the Agartala riot, between the Native Tripuri, Bengali and Japanese communities, which today resides under Bengal.
