"You don't need to keep it. You don't need to read it. It's not a holy book, its not political dogma, it is sound advice that I encourage people abide by."
The Augustus Flavius Aetius has given every citizen of his lands, a free copy of meditations. While many see this as a considerate gesture for the mental well-being of his people.
Some have likened it to dictators giving out their own books (like the Ruhnama in Turkministan) despite Meditations being written well over a thousand years ago.
“I didn't write it. You don't need to keep it. You don't need to read it. It's not a holy book, its not political dogma, it is sound advice that I encourage people abide by. No one is going to have to know it off by heart to get a drivers licence - its a gift to my people, and like any good gift, it is given free, with love, and with the freedom to refuse it.” - Flavius Aetius.
Many of the Augustus' supporters are very pleased with this gesture:
“The book means a lot to him, his people mean a lot to him - he knows it can help his people like it has helped him" - Senator Pertinax
