The Republic of Shelley Island (R.S.I.) has just adopted a new national flag.

The tricolor flag consists of a light blue band, a dark blue band, a yellow band, and a lion in the middle of the flag. Concretely, the light blue stripe represents the sky, the dark blue represents the ocean, and yellow represents Shelley Island's golden beaches. Abstractly, the light blue stripe represents tranquility; the dark blue represents trust and loyalty; the yellow represents happiness, and the lion represents courage.

The adoption of the flag was part of a process that took a year to complete. A year ago, the R.S.I. House of Representatives and Senate passed legislation that was later signed by President DMO, establishing a commission to design a new flag. The commission accepted submissions from across the nation and settled on five designs that the citizenry would vote on in a referendum. The winning design, created by Marie Bernard of Nouvelle-France, garnered a whopping 85% of the vote. The R.S.I. House of Representatives and Senate then unanimously approved legislation designating the winning design as the new flag of the Republic and sent the bill to the president at La Maison Bleue (The Blue House).

At the signing ceremony, President DMO expressed his love of and satisfaction with the new design. He also thanked the designer and commission members for their hard work. After the ceremony, the old flag flying over La Maison Bleue was lowered, and the new flag was raised. Also, the president announced that the new flag will be flying over all government (federal and state) buildings within the next two days and will be available for purchase by the general public within three days.
