After Ragnarok: The 90 Clans of the Descendants of Lif & Lífþrasir

A History of the Clans' Origins & Naming Conventions

Lif & Lífþrasir bore 81 Children in 9 Litters of 9
all litters consisted of 7 girls and 2 boys except the 3rd, 6th, & 9th which were solely girls (69 Daughters, 12 sons)

60 of the Daughters of Lif took Ljósalfar Spouses,
6 took Dökkálfar Spouses,
& 3 took Svartálfar as spouses

1 Son took a Ljósalfar , a Svartálfar, & a Dökkálfar as spouses,
7 of the Sons took 2 Spouses, a Svartálfar & a Dökkálfar each,
2 of the sons took Ljósalfar  Spouses,
1 son took a Dökkálfar Spouse,
& 1 son took a Svartálfar Spouse,

90 clans were made for the descendants of each of the 69 daughters of Lif & 21 Elf-Maiden spouses of the sons of Lif

Clan relation passed only through matrilineal decent except under the extremely rare circumstance of an Aesir or Vanir mother, as they did not have a clan, in which case the child would be adopted into a clan chosen by her mother, who would select a girl of the clan to be the child's Blessuðmóðir  ("Blessed Mother").
To be given a Blessandidóttir ("Blessing Daughter") was considered a Divine Honor, and the Blessuðmóðir would typically treat them as if they were their own child, lest they incur the anger of the gods.

Naming Conventions

The Descendants of Lif's Children have a Personal name, a Parental name, & a Clan name.

Personal Name

The Personal Name is given at birth and is rarely changed,
under certain circumstances of exile or outlawry one may be stripped of their personal name and given a weaker one, especially if their name was seen as unfitting to their character.

Parental Names

as the clan name was passed from the mother, the parental name was typically the father's name with the attached suffix -sson (for males & neutrals) or -sdóttir (for females) unless the mother was of higher reputation or status than the father or the father's name was unknown, then her name was used instead with the appropriate suffix.

Clan Names

All Clans actually have two names,
the Clan name was the Personal name of the original Clan mother of the clan with the suffix -ung / -ing
the Alternate name was a symbolic name or totem with the suffix -ätt. Most Totem names were named after animals, but some were forces of nature or even inanimate objects with symbolic or spiritual power.
as no clan names or totems were shared with another clan, either could be used interchangeably without confusion between them, which name was more used varied from clan to clan and could switch back and forth over time.

Titulary Names

Granted Titles replace the Parental Name, and it is considered disrespectful to address someone using the parental name instead of the Title in most formal settings, with some exceptions.
Royal or Noble Titulary came before the personal name, if the bearer also had a granted title both were used, however the parental name is dropped even if their is no granted title name. certain professions carried noble titles.

Craftsmanship

Both the tribes of Svartálfheimr were known to be the greatest craftsmen of all the realms.
The Dökkálfar are considered masters of jewelry & swordsmithing, Whereas the Svartálfar are considered masters of armoring, axe-smithing & hammer-smithing.
The crafts they were considered inferior in by the other were still considered better than any made by the Æsir, Jotunn or Humans.

The Ljósalfar are known for their mastery of archery & many forms of magic and poetry, they are also considered extremely talented sword fighters, some even on par with the Dökkálfar, though their swordsmithing & armory skills are not as good as the Dökkálfar & Svartálfar, they are considered superior to those of Man & Æsir

Society

The Dökkálfar & Svartálfar were once one tribe long before Ragnarok, but physical and social distinctions evolved over time after they separated.
The Males of the Dökkálfar & Svartálfar are disfigured with ritual scarring at birth, and all those who cry excessively during this process are abandoned on midgard to the wilderness.

Every 9 years, 9 males are sacrificed by each Svartálfar House, if the House does not have enough males or if they desire to spare their House-Kin they kidnap males from another house to sacrifice in their place, the houses typically have small wars over this, however the tactics used in these battles are not those they use in general warfare and are focused on capturing males alive, and single combat between champions with the aim of disarming over killing. its still considered murder to kill another female in these wars of sacrifice, and there are no known instances of a female dying in these “wars” after Ragnarok, though their are recorded instances of serious wounds. Males that reach the age of 50 and those under 15 are not eligible to be sacrificed.
These practices result in a very small male population relative to the total population for both tribes, but an even smaller ratio for Svartálfar.

Male Ljósalfar have more rights and opportunities than their Dökkálfar & Svartálfar counterparts but the society is still very matriarchal.

Martial Styles, Armor & Clothing

The Ljósalfar wore light fitting colorful silks, their armor was made with heavy layers of silk & chainmail of a special alloy only they new the recipe of, it was extremely effective at stopping arrows and swords, but not as effective against spears. They Primarily focused on their bow skills, but in close combat used long swords and magic.
The Dökkálfar typically wore nothing at all but jewelry, silk mesh or silver mesh, and sometimes chainmail & light unrestrictive armors. They did not use shields and typically either fought using hand-and-a-half swords or dual wielding various styles of one-handed swords. Their martial styles were very graceful and reliant on quick movements, mobility and parrying.
The Svartálfar wore silk mesh or silver mesh or nothing as well, but in combat they wore heavy scale and plate armors. They used heavy shields, spears and waraxes, except for their males and certain champions whom they sent in as shock troops with Two-handed warhammers and battleaxes. They also used explosive shrapnel grenade weapons. Their martial style was heavily reliant on Shield-wall style tactics, though they also felt honor-bound to accept challenges of single combat between champions of high status.

Faith & Worship

The Dökkálfar & Svartálfar both worship the Vanir as well as 5 of Sól's Children: Sólarljós The Sun Goddess, Mana-ugla The Moon God,  Managyðiur The Moon Goddess, Himneskur Regnbogi The Rainbow Princess & HrafnYlva The Raven
The Svartálfar also worship the Queen of Nidavellir, Who is the immortal half-elf Daughter of Freyja.
The Ljósalfar are known to worship the same 5 Children of Sól as the Dökkálfar & Svartálfar as well as honoring Freyja, Skaði, & Saga, but it is not known if they still worship the Vanir after the death of Freyr.

Halfalfr (Half-Elf)

562844526e694dd6e8e43e261c4af65e061e7181x48.png

As all of the Descendants of Lif took Elf Spouses, all their descendants are technically half-elf but are called humans, and as such the term halfalfr is only applied to later offspring of these “humans” and elfs.
Half-Elf Children who have an Elf mother do not have a clan (unless the elf has been adopted into a human clan after leaving her tribe), and instead have an elf-house, a similar matrilineal family structure amongst both tribes of the elves of Svartálfheimr & the elves of Ljosalfheimr

These children are actually more than half-elf, as all humans are now technically half elf and have elvish features, so they are very close in appearance to full-blooded elves.
