Main Story: Vulcanities Has New Plans, Government Has Opposition!

(The main story will be the subject of everything in this edition and will most of the time be the longest but most news like section)

3 miles outside of the Capitol Building, Holy Tomb, Vulcanities

Written and edited by: Riimen Riter

The Main story this week is one that has gained major traction within the nation of Vulcanities. Many people have taken many opposing sides in this conflict. The conflict centers around an issue of national infrastructure. Mainly whether or not to invest in a new city or build infrastructure in old cities of which a prime candidate is The Holy Tomb. Many people believe that Vulcanities’ new Expansion of the Angels bill will help in the way of establishing a new city. Written by a joint expansion committee led by Lead Senator Klen Snire a convert to Vulcan and immigrant who rose to office after publication of his best seller The High Mind. He has spearheaded projects that aim at rapid expansion and is a staunch member and in fact the leader of the OVK (Orbis, Vulcan, Kimen {Kimen was the founders last name}) party. A faction that represents manufacturing interests and has received backlash for anti-environmental sentiments while praise has been garnered on them for moves such as a higher advancement to the education system and a 5% cut to taxes. These were just a few of their twenty bills (in Vulcanities’ political system there is only the senate, and each member of the senate represents a party which in turn has a set number of bills they can pass based on the amount of people in their party actively in the senate. However, these bills automatically pass as long as the party agrees via majority on it.) Many parties have declared neutrality on these issues allowing the decently sized party to likely be able to pass this bill. The five in the VRD (Vulcan Royal Democrats) party, Ten in the Kolven Party (Famously dying party who have stated intentions to become a rural state and will likely maintain no seats next election), 24 in the Roller Party (Militarist), 6 in the K-Vice (A new version of the Kolven who would like to see a rural militarist state), and the 10 in the minority parties (parties too small to matter really) have all declared a neutral stance to blocking the bill to gain more cities. However, there is one main obstacle in the path of this bill. Though bills in Vulcanities pass automatically by party vote, votes can only be vetoed if enough senators from any party, except those people in the party giving the bill, decide against it. 45 out of the 100 senators must block the bill. Unfortunately for this bill in particular there is stiff opposition in the way of the majority party. Though most other parties have declared neutrality these guys are small fish and hold little to no political consequence. The Libertas Joint Party became the majority party after a long-expected merger with the Freemans Joint Party. They have 38 senators, 37 of which have agreed to the veto. Lead Senator of the Libertas Joint Party Alein Frin Sr. has stated many times even before this issue became central the need for a strong core city group that already had much of the expensive buildings prepared. In a now famous campaign speech that received praise for its extensive defenses of civil liberties and opportunity he slipped a comment on this issue that was lesser known. I quote “Many don’t realize this, but opportunity has a hard time growing 10,000 miles away from the capital. I mean who in Vulcan's name would want to leave the safety and comfort of the mother city where the culture is rich, and the food is delish [faint applause]. If you're a patriot, why don’t you stay and live a little in our country's place of founding.” Many people don’t remember this, but the senator sure does. You can catch more of Lead Senator Frin’s thoughts in our exclusive interview with him and Lead Senator Snire in our Opinion section. The majority Libertas party has one hope in a few senators from the Koven Party who, though staying with the party for now, likely may change their minds and with it the whole of the ten-senator party. Just eight senators hold the future of the nation in their hands as the deadline for the decision rapidly approaches. Vulcanities’ and her people are truly split in this war of words, and none know what the future holds. Write in the comments your thoughts on the subject at hand for your comments may influence the decision Senators from all sides would appreciate it.

Exclusive Lead Senatorial Interview

Riimen Riter: Hi everyone I’m Riimen Riter and today in this edition of the Opinions Section of the OOW we are joined by two special guests here to provide varying opinions as usual. Our first esteemed guest tonight is none other than Lead Senator of the new Libertas Joint Party Alein Frin Sr. [applause as he enters from stage left with a smile and waves and takes his seat on the circular couch Riimen sits on]

Frin Sr.: Hello, hello everyone. How you doing Riimen? Man, it’s been a while, hasn’t it?

Riimen: Yes sir, it has been some time and I’m doing great. How ‘bout yourself?

Frin Sr.: Doing just fine, just fine. The hairs been graying a bit but what can I expect.

Riimen: If it is, I don't notice it. Anyhow, as much as I love exchanging pleasantries with you, and I could do it all day, let’s get to the meat of this thing shall we. So here at OOW we have been doin our main story on this whole infrastructure vs. city thing and I understand you're on the infrastructure side of things. Would you mind explaining to everyone here your takes on this?

Frin Sr.: Right well let me start by saying this situation is more of a three-dimensional sorta thing. It's not Infrastructure v city per say it's a little more complex than just that. It has to do with the fact that our system maintains multiple parties who all maintain a certain extent of power leading to a specialization of politics to take shape. This is great but can be bad and also has the side effect, that can be seen as good or bad, that every problem has many, many, many layers behind it. My views on the infrastructure really stem from my personal childhood experiences and my current experiences. Before we unified as Vulcanities we were really messed up. We were just the same people fighting the same people. It wasn't about religion, hate, or anything. It was a well-documented land grab. Thankfully throughout these dark times a few cities sprung up and persisted, the foremost being the oldest capital and holiest site of the old Vulcan people. The Holy Tomb embodies our spirit as people and shows we are truly strong and persistent. However, these old childhood experiences of mine, running through the streets, playing at our numerous education centers, and being cared for at top-of-the-line hospitals, are being corrupted by these new experiences I have come to obtain. It is sad to see our capital in such a degraded state. Thankfully we saw some war repairs come to the city to repair the infrastructure lost but in other old and just as culturally important cities I know of people who still struggle to get to their house. We do not need another city; we need a stronger core and then we can focus outward only then can we achieve true dominance.

Riimen: Wow you still maintain the ability to captivate an audience even after so many years of being a politician. I must say this has been a really enlightening speech. However, I have a few questions. What do you say to the people who are running out of land who have been repeatedly blocked to gain deeds despite open land being right next to us? This ties into my next question: what about the open land next to us?

Frin Sr.: Well first I must say those are good questions. Hopefully my answer can match their excellence. To the people who are attempting to gain new land I promise them that the government will gain you new land through the increased infrastructure within the cities. In fact, this will happen faster than if we were to buy up a new city which takes time and resources we don’t have. This is a way more immediate and better solution. Now about the open land next to us, several of our cities are situated near those border expansion sites and all we must do is expand those cities and there we have it, an increased land area! I hope this clears the fog.

Riimen: Yes sir, I think it does. I have a few more questions for you to answer but it appears time flies as our time is already coming to a close. Thank you for coming in, sir. [Frin stands up, bows, shakes Riimen’s hand with a firm grip and begins to exit]. Lead Senator Alein Frin Sr. everyone [Loud applause].

Frin: [while leaving, smiling, and waving his hand] Thank you everyone! Bless Vulcan!

Riimen: Well welcome back folks as a reminder today's sponsor is Project Aequitas an incoming alliance seeking possible recruits. Message Maximus Democraticus for more details. Now back to the show we have one more esteemed guest to invite on the show today and that is none other than highly acclaimed author and Lead Senator, Klen Snire. [ Klen walks on and is followed by cheers from the audience].

Snire: Hello my good friends. I'm glad to be here!

Riimen: I’m glad you’re glad to be here cause I most certainly am. So, before I get into the nitty gritty Senator-

Snire: Klen will do.

Riimen: …Klen, l would like to get to know you and what your whole story is a bit more seeing as I have yet to have you on the show.

Klen: Right, well as many know I was originally an immigrant however, I am in an odd situation because my grandparents originally hailed from Vulcanities but fled during the Chivalrian persecution. They were lucky because they were found guilty of practicing and escaped so it was a lucky break. After that ended some twenty years after the fact my parents were growing up and eventually decided when I was around 5 or 6 that it was time to come back. I also am interested in the fact that I converted to Vulcan even though my parents still practice Chivalrian practices and so do my grandparents.

Riimen: Wow, that's really cool. Tell me when did you switch?

Klen: Maybe when I was 17, I got the idea for it, and I really officially didn’t switch until I was 22 or 23 so I am still relatively new.

Riimen: Wow, so explain how you got involved with the OVK and politics and how you really achieved a meteoric rise within the party?

Klen: Well as many know it really all started surprisingly with a book I authored. At that time, I was 26 and relatively young and was exploring the mysteries of Vulcan when I thought you know what maybe these two religions, I have grown up with aren’t so different. At the time I wanted to become a journalist, but I made the unexpected twist to becoming an author. So, I authored this book called Compare and Contrast: My Life and it became a small-scale hit. After that I said, well you know what I like this whole writing thing and decided to keep going and I kinda bounced of that cash I made originally from the book for a while and luckily was able to convince my publisher to give me another year and a half to finish my writing on what would become my Magnum Opus. This was my best seller The High Mind which introduces a mix of historical research I did and a few other things to try and find clues as to the origins of these two religions and to find out their similarities but in a historical fashion. I found a few things here and there and it really turned into a novel of sorts. I won’t spoil it, but I think my revelations were very interesting. I ended up getting into politics because the OVK actually said would you like to write a book about a few things we’ve got for you. Actually, me and former party leader and founder of the OVK Josep Kimen really hit it off. The rest was history, and I would eventually be politically substantial enough to not fill his shoes but at least keep his seat warm.

Riimen: Yeah, I was actually fortunate enough to read this amazing book and I mean wow being a follower myself I just was amazed by the things I discovered about myself. Anyhow, let’s get down to the crazy stuff now, shall we?

Klen: Sure, why not.

Riimen: Alright well I’m really on the fence in terms of this whole infrastructure v. city thing and I mean I know where you stand in terms of this whole thing seeing as you lead the committee that wrote the starting stuff for this. What sort of thing do you have to say to someone who is really on the fence right now cause I know I cannot be the only one.

Klen: You definitely are not the only one who feels that way Riimen, I even felt that way when I started but when you really dig deep into the facts, I found that building more cities may just be the thing we need to grow Vulcanities. If you look at infrastructure you see that the cost outweighs the benefits in most scenarios. Take a good look at cities and you’ll find that since the exponential growth rates are reset it is easier to grow new things, create a bigger population and benefit the very people living in the capital, albeit in a very indirect way.

Riimen: That sounds good but what do you say to the people who say that the first couple of infrastructure slots that are used on basic necessities for a city, offset the cost benefit and actually may put it in the positive.

Klen: To those people I say “talk to our engineers” because they have really been working hard to find nice ways to reduce needed necessities to like 1-4 infrastructure slots in a city. That is not going to impact the exponential growth rate for the cost of infrastructure. In terms of outright cost, which has a lot of people concerned, I would say that it isn’t a problem Vulcanities has demonstrated an ability to raise money fast. Back when we were building Stronghold, we stopped military funding and were able to sell our steel for a good profit. We are still a relatively young nation, so the international grants are something we need to use. Currently our grants are being misused by a public afraid of an attack that won’t come. I’m not saying we stop military operations; I'm just saying we stop them until the new city comes.

Riimen: Well sir, you provide a convincing case. I think I’m still split but this really has provided valuable insight to the problem at hand. On behalf of the OOW I thank you for coming in tonight.

Klen: Thank you. [Klen leaves with a wave to the audience, applause can be heard]

Riimen: Well folks that’s all tonight stay tuned for next week's first non-intro edition to ever hit the scene. As always leave a comment and a like if you feel so inclined cause, it does help the show. Any questions, comments, or concerns can be messaged to the editor High Lord RoManic of Vulcanities. Thank You and have a wonderful rest of the evening!

Comedy Section: Comic Comments!

(God this section needs help… but this is the comedy section. A lot of the “jokes” will be related to the main story or the opinion section, but it may not be necessary to read through the whole thing sometimes.)

“It appears for once a populace may have actually taken a vested interest in infrastructure. Ohhh Bridges, Ahhh street management, Whoaaaaa Structural Engineers they're so structured?”

The Semi-Yearly Herald

“Klen you're always looking here and there, here and there. …We don’t listen to a word you say, word you say.”  Though a horrid rendition, Klen, by Michael Jordan is a beautiful song about a half rat half man it gets Five Stars.”

The Mocker

“Riimen Riter pulls it off yet again with a stunning article that should be titled Riter Feigns Interest in Uninteresting Things and Fails Again.”

The 5 Cent

Like Goal: 15

(The Like Goal section is meant to be slightly hard to reach but if you like and leave a comment and we hit our like goal you could get lucky and be the one who wins 2.5 MILLION dollars! *)

The End

If you've made it this far congrats! However, if you really have made it this far, I have a special mission for you. To help maintain my goal of a weekly Orbis paper I need a staff willing to help me out for free. If we are really able to get ads running it may not stay that way and I’ll greatly appreciate the people helping me out if you know what I mean. I’m mainly looking for people willing to promote, write, edit, and generally help in this production. I will even take a few seconds of hard work by one person so it's not a big-time commitment. I'll be flexible. If you are interested in volunteering message me, RoManic! Even if you don’t want to directly help you can still help in a small way by liking and commenting which will increase my ad revenue. Thanks for reading and stay tuned for the first real edition next week!

Orbis Orbiter Weekly is a production of High Lord RoManic any questions, comments, or concerns will be happily answered. Thank You!

Special Thanks to: Project Aequitas, Maximus Democraticus, and others for review help and support.
