The autism conspiracy

Should autism be labeled as it is today? I think not. The diagnosis does not take into consideration other cultures norms and whatnot, and the disorder is considered too broad. The school systems are abusing this disorder to take in tons of money, at the expense of the diagnosed well being. While there are some children with "genuine autism", the disorder goes on massively overdiagnosed. Thoughts on this? This was not meant to be offensive btw

You say autism is too broad a term... but autism in and of it's self is an umbrella term: there's a whole spectrum of autism ranging from Aspergers to Down Syndrome.

Most of that sounds like hogwash, and I don't think the your post necessarily warrants the title Autism conspiracy.

No proof? My elementary school was one of those that got in trouble for overdiagnosis. And Down syndrome is a seperate disorder from autism. I do think that ADHD is also overdiagnosed for similar reasons.

There were a few autistic kids in my school, none were diagnosed with something they didn't have.

Down Sydrome is a chromosomal abnormality where a person has 47 instead of 46 chromsomes (usually extra 21st)

Autism is defined as a mental condition that affects the way a person communicates or forms relationships with another person.

Even if schools were abusing their ability, they wouldn't get as much money as you think.

Just for clarity, it isn't usually an extra 21st chromosome; it's always an extra 21st chromosome.  If you have a trisomy condition (meaning you have 3 of one or more chromosomes, instead of the normal 2), the name of your condition depends on which chromosome is increased.

I do think there is a definite danger in over diagnosing mental illnesses in children but to my understanding autistic children show very definite signs of the disease at a young age. So no, I do not think is it a conspiracy and I do not hope that schools milk the extra funds rather than helping the children.

I know my school system definetly had a problem with overdiagnosis and fund mishandling. They would buy video games and have the kids play on that stuff instead of helping them with their disabilities. The "therapy" that they did was also bullshit. They sat in a circle and said hi, ate, then left. While the kids in the autistic class were doing that, the school admin was telling all the other kids that those in the class were essentially retarded.  And then in the middle school they really didnt even have an autistic education program. The only thing that the teacher did was let the kids play on the computer and do homework, yet the school still recieved high levels of funding for this program. The reason I know this is, because one of my friends went through that mess due to some issues with one of his parents dying when he was young. The school saw his anti-social behavior and put him in those classes.

Yes, autism is a real issue, but I believe that there should be seperate disorders and no 'autism spectrum'. I know some of my friends who are on the very high functioning end were put in classrooms with people who were mentally as well as socially retarded. And another thing that I do not understand is how they attempt to treat this disorder at schools. They put the autistic children together to apparently get meaningful social interaction. I for one do not understand why the hell they would do this. The only thing this does is cause them to act more like the lowest common denominator, instead of increasing their social skills. It would make more sense to have them with normal children than with disabled one's IMO

ADHD is overdiagnosed. But autism, as stated by CrackedMind is an umbrella term for a series of Mental illnesses. And as for the rest of the post, it is mostly just conspiracy material. There is no proof.

ADHD is NOT overdiagnosed. Shut your mouth and open it only to take your atomoxetine/methylphenidate/dextroamphetamine sulfate or saccharate/amphetamine sulfate or asparamate/duloxetine/fluoxetine or any combination of the aforementioned.

SSRI's, benzodiazepines, SNRI's, various antipsychotics, and a number of others are all highly effective in treating the behavioral symptoms of autism spectrum disorders. Mental illness is like asthma, diabetes, or any number of other chronic conditions; it can be controlled with medication to help people lead productive lives. Some people have share prices riding on this sort of thing These sufferers deserve their dignity and proper treatment.

Most of the people I know with autism are not suffering, but are instead having alot of fun. My one friend uses it as an excuse to hit on my other friends mom all the time, and she cant really say anything about it.

So should funding go more to public awareness about the autism spectrum rather than needless treatments that have no proven efficacy?

Funding should, naturally, go towards treating autism spectrum disorders. It should preferably be through the government, some kind of program, because private charities suck. We should have a government department to fund all mental illness treatment, it would be great for my portfolio for us as a society.

Are you suggesting socialised health care?

What the people decide will be adequate, but they should know that only the government has the sufficient incompetence and corruption to take the right contracts resources and wisdom to handle such a monumental task as treating this nation's mentally ill people. Those with autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, ODD, Depression, bipolar disorder, and any number of other problems facing numerous Americans deserve to be treated by an appropriately large and easily influenced properly staffed and funded organization for such. Imagine the upticks in Eli Lilly stock productivity figures and complementary drops in crime rates! To do any less would be an injustice to my personal finances millions of sufferers.
