Why MMO(RTS) Are Struggling

I used to play a game called Haven and Hearth that had the same problem.  It's an MMORPG, but the point is there comes a point where you can't explore anymore.  You maximize the discoveries available, build everything you can, unlock all the skills imaginable, and get bored.

It was still competitive though in the sense that you competed to found and preserve a domain.

Competitions are nice if there's always another level to compete over, but when status converges to certainty, people get bored and leave.
