Captcha Change Proposal

(AKA Politics And War: Episode V – The Captcha Strikes Back)

Google reCAPTCHA's "Tough on bots; Easy on humans!" tagline is a pretty true statement when the service is being used to check if the user is human during a non-repetitive task such as creating a forum account or signing up for an email. The problem with using it to check for bots or scripts attempting to use P&W is that this is a repetitive action from the same user on the same domain... After a few uses by a P&W User, rather than them performing a simple mouse position check, reCAPTCHA furthermore prompts them to complete to complete a picture task with up to nine or more images and a direction such as finding all the images with trees (or street signs) which can easily become tedious.

Google reCAPTCHA's "Tough on bots; Easy on humans!" tagline quickly becomes increasingly less true based on it's presumption that the user is a bot due to the repetitive nature of their action on P&W. What I propose is P&W uses Solve Media Captcha Type-In instead, rather than the user needing to do the aforementioned picture task, they would instead see an image advertisement which contains a phrase which needs to be typed into a text-box, doing so would complete the captcha. I feel this would save a considerable amount of time for the user, and possibly also help P&W earn money towards server costs and such due the monetization.

EDIT: It has recently came to my attention that the "Human Check" process happens way too often (today there was fifteen Away Games on the Baseball Screen, and monetarily it makes more sense to do all those games rather than let somebody else do them... But in the five minutes I was doing these Away Games, I received five of these checks, roughly one per minute), I feel that instead these checks should grant a certain amount of time where no checks shall be made. For example, each check could give a player fifteen minutes of gameplay without the checks. Feel free to bring up your own ideas here too.

Yeah...  :D As far as I know that's an older version of Solve Media Captcha Type-In, the one I'm referring to just uses ads, similar to the image below.

As one of the most active traders on the market, I just tested both and am positive that I can finish the Google captcha far faster than the Solve Media captcha. I get what you're saying, but to me typing a verification is just as tedious as clicking a set of pictures.

  • Wiki Mod

Also the pictures are magnitudes easier on a phone then anything involving typing.

23:39 zombie_lanae yeah I do hope we can keep having them all to ourselves

The problem I have with the current system is that how annoying it is. After a few times it'll require me to do images instead of doing just the mouse position thing, sometimes every 5 minutes. I personally feel it's easier and quicker to look at an obvious string of text and type it back rather than compare up to nine images and find all the ones that have trees, waterfalls, street signs, store fronts, etc.

Are you saying you get tired of seeing trees?

The thing is, comparing images with and without trees, waterfalls, street signs, store fronts and so on can take time, on average I'd take about 10-15 seconds to do the picture test puzzles, especially with street signs or store fronts because they're so similar to another category (e.g: house fronts, barns, etc.). Really, I just wish it'd be a lot easier (e.g: around 5 seconds), seeing as I see these human checks sometimes five or six times in a 10 minute period.

Can there be a compromise here?

If Alex would make more money using the other captcha, can we have less captchas? He makes money, we fill in less captchas. Yes?

This isn't a bad idea, it was the intended result of such a change... Other than that I think typing by eye is faster than comparing multiple images.

So you don't like taking time to look at trees? Am I hearing this right?

I'm saying that I find it a waste of time to compare these images when these "human checks" appear so often. E.g: Sometimes I might get one every 3-5 minutes if I'm doing a repetitive task like doing all the available away games at Baseball (sometimes there might be eight to twelve in a row I can do, and from a monetary perspective it makes more sense to do all of them). The bigger picture is that I think the "human check" is far too often, maybe once every fifteen minutes or half an hour for a person? Not every few times the player does a repeated action, like buying or selling, or doing away games, because it gets tedious and annoying quickly. That's my problem.

So you would rather type letters and numbers instead of click trees?

I, WISD0MTREE, take it upon myself to defend trees worldwide. Representing the collective tree population, I would like to state that I regret coming to this point in history where trees are under attack on internet browser games. These baseless attacks are a source of frustration and a waste of time for trees worldwide. A wise man once said, "The Internet will break down national borders and lead to world peace." In light of recent attacks on trees, I'd like for the world to reflect upon how the internet is capable of spreading great amounts of hate worldwide. Bullies, and trolls have rooted themselves in the internet and remain a sizeable force in the modern internet world. In your internet travels, you can't escape their influence. Seeing as how CTxCB has ruthlessly attacked trees under the guise of improving the Captcha system, the trees are forced to take action. Henceforth, the first nation which mobilizes against Brand New America shall be rewarded with one unit of uranium. We would like to thank all support received from foreign units during this time of distress. Trees worldwide sincerely hope this will deter any future attacks against our honor on this series of concatenated computer networks we call the internet.

I do agree that Captchas are too frequent. I barely use the market and it feels like I have to do one almost every time I go there. I actually do like the current Captchas, but I suppose it is personal preference and mostly due to being more accustomed them.

No need to cause politics or a war, I love trees... Here I am waving my little white flag on a stick!  :D

Yeah, I've updated the main post with an edited section at the bottom. Feel free to chime in with your own ideas, and everyone else.

The ad revenue would be negligible at best. This particular captcha being proposed is garbage. It's not geared towards preventing automation. Just towards forcing ads. if he wants to add ads then just add ads. Don't force it on the captchas. That's just stupid.

Yes, but seriously though, less captcha please, when you're actively trying to use the market and check on several trades you may have going at any given time it's so annoying to have that thing pop up every 5 minutes.
