Communications Failure - Mars Outpost

Recommended Posts

Hungadadian Mars, Communications Center, Omega 1:

"Expedition One, come in". There was no response. The technicians said that the radio should have been working now, since they had upgraded its capacity and fixed. Nobody doubted their abilities, and if the best technicians the HAA had ever come across couldn't fix the problem, nobody could.

"Expedition One, this is Hotel-Mike Charlie Charlie, do you read?" Again there was no response. Everyone was puzzled. The supervisor gave the order to shutdown every communication device. Only 1 device remained active, the one at the comms center. For the next 45 minutes, dozens and dozens calls were made to Expedition One, the expedition which had gone on a confidential mission outside of Hungadadian Mars sovereign territory. Many calls were made:

"Hotel-Mike Charlie Charlie calling Echo One. Come in"

"Hotel-Mike Charlie Charlie calling Echo One, how do you read?"

"Hotel-Mike Charlie Charlie calling Echo One, urgent call, pickup immeadiate"

"Echo One, this is Hotel-Mike Charlie Charlie, come in"

All these calls were made to no avail. "Try Expedition two" said the supervisor "We spoke with them only 10 minutes ago" "Perhaps One have a radio issue". The controller attempted to make contact with Echo two. "Echo two, this is Hotel-Mike Charlie Charlie calling Echo two, come in". There was no response.

The supervisor was frustrated. "Call Hungadada" he said, a hint of fear in his voice. "This is Hotel-Mike Charlie Charlie calling Hungadada Aerospace Administration Mars Mission Control, come in." There was silence. All of a sudden the radio began to buzz with loud static. And then silence.

An alarm sounded.

"Sir, weather radar alert, storm incoming from the east. Winds are a code red. Evacuation of town recommended. 2 hours till contact"

"Okay, ask every human on this otupost to gather clothes, belongings, toiletries and so on, and move towards the compound as fast as possible. No exeptions!" said the supervisor, quickly.

"Try Hungadada again". "Hungadada Aerospace Administration, this is Hotel-Mike Charlie Charlie calling, come in, code urgent."

There was no response.

For the first time since arriving, the Hungadadians were alone, on Mars.

ISIS' Lovely Smile, Orbis IV Starbase

"Report."

"Sir, there seems to be a disturbance in local weather patterns.  It seems to threaten a colony of the natives of Orbis III."

"One of their colonies is threatened?  How is their government reacting?"

"Panic and fear, sir."

"Then what are you waiting for, man?  Send a team immediately and see what you can do."

And so, a number of drop pods filled with medical staff and a number of all-terrain vehicles were deployed from the Starbase, hurling towards the Hungandian colony.  Times might have been tight and the next resource shipments might not come for weeks, but it was clear that they were needed now.

A mere storm should not have done that much damage, but no one ought to be left to die.

Comms Center:

"Sir, we're picking up vehicles moving towards the colony!" said the controller anxiously.

"Send out a security team immeadiatley!" replied the supervisor.

"ATTENTION ATTENTION THIS IS A CODE TIGER ALERT. ALPHA TEAM WESTBOUND 370. Intercept vehicles incoming and question their purpose.

As Alpha team left in their vehicles, they could only imagine who these people were. Why were they headed for the colony?

Yet another Transmission was sent as the Drop pods began to hit the surface.

Greetings, Carbons.  We received multiple distress signals from this region.  Are you sure you don't require assistance?  In the event you do not wish to have assistance, please wait until our medical and emergency response personnel are picked up.  Should you require our expedient departure, our drop pods can be set to self-destruct, although please understand that this may cause a loud noise near your position.

"Sir, we're picking up radio interference. It seems that the radio is working!"

The message played out, albeit with half of it missing:

"Radio them back!" yelled the Supervisor quickly. "Also, who pressed the distress beacon?!". A small voice came from behind. "Me sir". The supervisor glared, and said "I'll deal with you later".

A response was sent:

"Greetings. Thank you for coming to our aid. It seems that currently, we are not in too much of a sticky situation. There seems to be some sort of issue with our radioes, which is why we panicked, and also why somebody pressed the distress beacon. Thank you for your assistance, however I don't think we need it. If you have engineers, however, we would very much appreciate if they could come look at our comms, and figure out what's wrong. The worst of the storm seems to have passed, so we invite you to come to our Town Hall for some food, as a little thank you."

The message was sent.
